
The Integrated Community Education and Development Association (ICEDA) is a national organization registered with the Ministry of Justice of Ethiopia, with certificate number 1226 established in 1998. ICEDA has signed operational agreement with Federal Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission in February 2005. The association is working in partnership with Oromia Education Bureau (OEB). ICEDA has a head office in Addis Ababa with its branch office located in Dukem town of Akaki district.
The mission of ICEDA is making education first for all children through alternative approaches with the active involvement of all stakeholders.
The purpose of establishment ICEDA is:
a) To promote non-formal basic education in disadvantaged communities.
b) To promote human rights and civic education against harmful traditional practices.
c) To promote community conversation and dialogue on RH and HIV/AIDS.
d) To initiate projects those improve the livelihoods of poor families and women.
· By conducting Alternative Basic Education in 18 disadvantaged rural villages where more than 8,000 out of school children and adults got access to primary education
· ICEDA is fighting harmful traditional practices such as FGC and early forced marriage through literacy advocacy programs.
· ICEDA establishes local support groups to organize women into self-help association, which mobilize resources and advocate for change. We are trying to have women elected as members of the local governments.
· ICEDA lobbies the government to adopt new laws-both civil and criminal codes concerning violence against women, women’s rights and marriage. We are lobbying the ministry of education to incorporate information about children & women’s rights into the schools curriculum.
· ICEDA is also particularly focusing on youth. ICEDA has organized young people in to anti-HTP/HIV clubs and trained them in outreach work, leadership and networking. They organize more clubs and awareness-raising events at community level.
· Facilitating the involvement of the target communities in all development activities by managing the projects with the maximum ownership feeling.
· Making use of indigenous self-help and conflict resolving knowledge and influential persons.
· Establishing mother, fathers and girls forums at the target villages to promote public debate on human rights and democracy.
· Conducting different studies and researches on the socio economic problems of the target communities and disseminating them.
· Developing appropriate educational and training materials and distributing them.
· Organizing seminars, workshops and various capacity building trainings.
· Organizing advocacy, lobbying, rallies and special social mobilization events
· Encouraging voluntarism for grassroots developments.
· Award role model community leaders that brought change of policies
Ø ICEDA works in close collaboration as partner with community-based organizations, social institutions, local and international NGOs and government organizations.
Ø ICEDA is a founding member of BEN (Basic Education Association of Ethiopia), member of anti-FGM national network, member of network of East Africa NGOs on ending gender-based violence, member of Pan-African Coalition against gender –based violence, member of Pan-African Coalition against Violence against Women, Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF) as well as member of AWID (Association of Women and Development).
Ø The mothers’ forums are members of Mothers International Network for Empowerment (MINE)
A Board of Management governs ICEDA, which is accountable to the General Assembly.
The day-to day activities are performed by the Secretariat. An Executive Director who is appointed by the Board heads the Secretariat. The Board has 5 members (4 male and one female) who are voluntarily working.
Currently, ICEDA is made up of 4offices and one project office under the Secretariat that is headed by the Secretary.
